Of the locomotive breath Runs the all-time loser Headlong to his death Oh, he feels the piston scraping Steam breaking on his brow Old Charlie stole the handle And the train — it won't stop going No way to slow down He sees his children jumping off At stations one by one His woman and his best friend In bed and having fun Oh, he's crawling.

Instrumentally, “Locomotive Breath” consists of three very distinct segments, each with a unique sound. The first segment opens the scene for the rest of the song. It consists of a melancholy piano, accompanied by short, sympathetic riffs from a distorted electric guitar, leading up to the second section, a full duet, before the song proper.
